Our Videos 2025 & 2026

One of Mother Nature Cambodia's most successful strategies has been to use social media, chiefly our own Facebook page 'Mother Nature Cambodia', to highlight and expose the corruption, human rights abuses and environmental destruction that usually comes hand in hand with so-called development projects by the authoritarian government of Hun Sen.  The main reasons we started producing our own stuff back in 2013 were simple: most mainstream media outlets did not dare report on the issues we were working on, and the few independent outlets that existed - most of whom have been since shuttered by the regime, sadly - did not have the resources to visit the remote areas where we usually work. So we decided to create an opportunity out of this seemingly insurmountable obstacle: to produce our own stuff.  Our videos, a mixture of thorough investigation and short and easy-to-digest messages presented by our brave activists as well as citizens from all walks of life, have been viewed over 20 million times, and shared more than a million times, and that's just since 2015.  This is a most remarkable achievement for several reasons: a) as anyone with experience in producing videos knows, it is not easy to produce stuff that is attractive to the general public; b) the risks associated to filming and speaking on videos in Cambodia can be high, with arbitrary arrests and even jail time not at all unusual (as some of our activists can sadly vouch for); A lot of our videos are regularly picked up by the media, politicians, NGOs, etc, and have in many cases forced the Phnom Penh regime to publicly respond (not an easy feat in Cambodia by any means), for instance by backtracking on key decisions, or by putting an end to certain destructive practices. Not just that, but we are proud to say that many young people have told us that they find the videos inspirational, and that they too want to get involved in social justice and environmental protection.

For videos from other years, see: 2016&2017 /2018 /2019 & 2020 / 2021 & 2022 / 2023&2024

Note:

To get a better idea of the high impact of our videos, mentioning number of Likes, Shares, Comments, etc, watch them on our Facebook page (link next to each video's description). Also do note that as many FB pages pick up and 're-post' our videos on their own pages, the true scale of our videos is much higher than what is depicted in our page.

Silence? Silence? Silence? Is it totally silence?

The Ministry of Environment continues to move at a disgracefully slow, snail-like pace. The delay has gone far beyond what is reasonable, repeatedly demonstrating its failure to fulfil its own promises.

The Ministry proudly claims that it has been studying and documenting the environmental potential of Koh Kong Island since 2016. But where are the results? Will the so-called Dr. Eang Sophalleth dare to publicly explain how far the process of designating Koh Kong Island as a marine national park has actually progressed?

Five years, not five months, and certainly not five days. Five full years have passed, yet the Ministry still has not managed to designate Koh Kong Island as a marine national park.  #savekohkongisland

📜 "If you do nothing, you too will become a victim. It's simply not your turn yet."

July is a time for every Cambodian to ask ourselves: "What must we do next?" for social and environmental justice. Prison walls and bullets may silence a person, but they can never destroy conscience, integrity, or truth.

Let us keep the flame of justice alive. Do not let the sacrifices of Dr. Kem Ley and the Mother Nature Cambodia activists fade into silence.

Jul 1st, 2026

On July 2, the court brought down its hammer to kill the truth. But the truth never dies—it lives on in each of us. Refusing to stay silent and continuing to rise up is the only way to save ourselves from injustice.

👉Clearing forests and encroaching on protected areas under the guise of "development" and "investment" has become as easy as peeling a banana for corrupt officials and powerful figures in this nepotistic regime.

⚠️Another alarming discovery: Mother Nature Cambodia has uncovered multiple cases of mangrove forest destruction within the Koh Kapik Ramsar Site. In some areas, the mangrove forests have already been cleared and converted into coconut plantations.

We will continue to speak out about this issue until the mangrove forests are protected and kept safe.

Please share this video to help bring attention to this issue and demand action.

Thank you.

Today, 70 national and international organizations sent an official letter to Prime Minister Hun Manet, calling for the immediate release of the five Mother Nature Cambodia activists.  For nearly two years, the five have been deprived of their freedom while waiting for their appeal hearing. The repeated postponement of their hearing is not only a denial of justice, but also a source of severe emotional distress for their families, loved ones, and supporters.  How can we continue to tolerate such injustice? Voices of solidarity are growing from all corners of the world. We call on the authorities to immediately release the five activists and uphold their fundamental human rights.

One year ago today, Mother Nature Cambodia released satellite evidence showing the presence of more than 1,000 Vietnamese fishing boats operating in Cambodian waters between 2021 and 2025. Yet after 365 days, the public has received nothing but silence from the relevant authorities.  We hope this year of silence means officials have been seriously investigating, verifying facts, and gathering evidence to finally provide clear answers to the public. Enough is enough.

Isn’t it strange, that part of a wildlife sanctuary is being turned into a dumping site? Is this really the environmental strategy being promoted?

Mother Nature Cambodia has raised concerns about this issue since 2023, warning against using a wildlife sanctuary as a landfill site. Yet the dumping site continues to grow larger year after year.

A simple question to Minister Eang Sophalleth: if you are incapable of solving this problem for the people, why do you not step down from your position?

#YimLeanghy — “A Heartbreaking Farewell Letter and Final Promise”

Dear beloved mother,

From this narrow prison cell, I write to you with tears and words that cannot fully express how much I miss you. I have received news about your health condition, and my heart feels as if it is being torn apart knowing you are suffering from cancer—yet I cannot be by your side to take care of you.

In the silence of this prison, I often think of your face and hands, rough from years of hard work. Everything I am today—my knowledge, my strength—is because you are a “woman of steel.” You worked day and night, sacrificing everything so I could study and learn the value of integrity above wealth. I will never forget your unconditional love, even selling land and possessions to treat my illness when I lost my mind for months.

Mother, did you know? There is a way I could see you one last time—simply by saying “sorry” and abandoning my life ideals. But I remember your words: “Even in death, we must die with dignity.” You would never………..

🚨 Today, Mother Nature Cambodia is sharing data on the large-scale import of gold bars from Thailand into Cambodia, an issue that has raised serious questions among the Cambodian public.  We would like to ask Cham Nimul, Minister of Commerce, Chea Serey, Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia, and Aun Pornmoniroth, Minister of Economy and Finance:

1. Why did Cambodia continue importing gold bars from Thailand during the tense border conflict at that time, while many Cambodian citizens were voluntarily boycotting Thai products in response to the government’s call to defend national dignity and solidarity?

2. Ordinary citizens have sacrificed and stood by their principles. So why are powerful elites and major business groups still allowed to continue business as usual? Is this not a “double standard”?

If there is no clear and proper explanation, this will not only discourage the public, but also seriously betray the trust of the Cambodian people.  Cambodians deserve the truth about this matter. 📢 Please help share this video so the truth can reach all Cambodian people. Thank you.

Words that cannot be forgotten, a lasting reminder to awaken the conscience of officials who choose to protect profiteers over the public good. A call that echoes, urging Khmer people to rise.

In a society where the law mandates that public officials must remain accountable and loyal to the people, the reality is that some officials in positions of power dare to use offensive language toward citizens, even going so far as to label them “illegal groups.”  Before taking office, they swear an oath to uphold the law and serve the national interest. Yet their actions stand in stark contradiction to that oath. This is not a minor issue. It reveals a serious failure of responsibility and a blatant disregard for citizens’ rights to speak, to question, and to defend their own natural resources.  This is only one example. There are many other officials who fail to respond to citizens with honesty and integrity, choosing instead to protect power and personal interests. When the voices of the people are ignored, when questions are silenced, who are these officials truly serving?  We will continue to speak out on this issue, because it clearly shows that some officials are not fulfilling their duties, but are instead living off salaries drawn from the sweat and sacrifice of the people, while showing no respect for them and no willingness to address the challenges they face.

Apr 6th, 2026

Mother Nature Cambodia decided to produce this video after a visitor witnessed unusual activities and urgently reached out to us, asking for help to share the story.  Some of you might think this issue is minor compared to the tens of millions of tonnes of illegal sand dredging along the Mekong River.  But why did we still choose to speak about this case? Because that visitor was concerned and deeply cared about our natural resources. They recorded the incident and sent it to us, hoping to raise questions to those responsible. They also tried to find a way to report it to the relevant authorities, but did not know who to contact.  This is a problem many of us are facing. Especially for local communities, people often do not know which activities are legal or illegal in protected areas, nor which authorities they should report to.  At the same time, our silence creates opportunities for protected areas to be violated. What we consider “not a big deal” today can become a serious problem tomorrow, if everyone starts doing the same thing. This is not just a single case.  Koh Rong has been granted to Kith Meng for development over a 99-year period. Yet, we do not clearly know whether the laws on protected areas are being strictly enforced during this development. Meanwhile, development plans include an airport, golf courses, five-star resorts, and more. As a reminder, we call on officials responsible for protected areas to carry out their duties with seriousness and accountability. There must be regular patrols along the coastline to monitor whether this kind of sand extraction is happening frequently.  And an important question remains: What law allows this kind of sea sand extraction for use? Or are we simply unaware of such permissions?

A landfill inside Peam Krasop Wildlife Sanctuary has rapidly expanded to 8 hectares, raising serious concerns.

Satellite analysis shows the waste pile growing from about 1 hectare in early 2022, to 4 hectares in 2024, and reaching 8 hectares by 2026.

On July 17, 2023, a new sub-decree officially redefined the boundaries of Peam Krasop Wildlife Sanctuary. According to the map and coordinate points 22 to 25 in Sub-Decree No. 164 (July 17, 2023), this 8-hectare landfill lies entirely within the protected natural area.

Why is waste dumping taking place inside a wildlife sanctuary? What do you think? Please share your thoughts in the comments box below.

Why is there a debate over this issue, which is polluting water sources in the Virachey National Park in northeastern Cambodia, spanning across Ratanakiri Province and Stung Treng Province? Certainly, this issue must be confronted because officials from the Ministry of Mines and Energy are using their power to shield a company controlled by Try Pheap. While international media conducted thorough investigations into water pollution, officials and the company collaborated to dismiss the findings as “fake news” instead of taking responsibility for contaminating water sources that are the lifeline of local communities. The corruption within the Environmental Impact Assessment process is evident. No expert analysis is needed to see the irregularities. Producing EIA reports merely as a formality and withholding critical information reflects serious negligence by responsible authorities, and may indicate collusion with the company. In summary, the land concession was granted without clear explanation, without transparency, and with continued denial. Documents reviewed by Mongabay reveal that the company previously received a 18,900-hectare (46,700-acre) mining exploration license inside Virachey National Park. If they truly wish to clear their name, they must immediately ensure transparency in the company’s operations and conduct independent, thorough testing of water and soil samples.

Sand dredging along the Mekong River continues to increase every year, while riverbank erosion also persists without stopping. A report by Mekong Eye shows that the amount of sand being extracted exceeds the amount that the river can naturally replenish.  Therefore, major questions remain for senior experts and officials as follows:

Does sand dredging along Cambodia’s rivers today actually help reduce riverbank erosion? Or is it instead destroying the river and the livelihoods of local communities? If it is truly a protective measure against erosion, could you explain it clearly to us, as well as to the citizens who have lost land and homes due to the river swallowing the banks? And could you also provide data on all this sand extraction? #MekongRiver #SandDredging #EnvironmentalJustice #protectourrivers

We dream of seeing Koh Kong Island belong to all Cambodian citizens, not to a small group of wealthy and powerful individuals like what happened on Koh Rong.   We dream of a marine national park that serves everyone, a place for people of all backgrounds.

Can the government make this dream a reality? We are not against development. But if we remain silent about the kind of reckless development happening in Cambodia today, our natural resources will not survive for the next generation.

Do not use the word “development” as a mask to justify the exploitation and destruction of our nation’s natural treasures for the benefit of a few. Please share this video to urge the government to rethink its actions and to immediately and unconditionally release our five friends. #SaveKohKongIsland #សង្គ្រោះកោះកុងក្រៅ

Sep 24th, 2025

Koh Kong Island, Cambodia’s largest island, has still not been declared a marine national park under the vision of “Koh Kong Island for all.”  On June 3, 2020, the Ministry of Environment promised to announce Koh Kong Island as a marine national park in 2021.

Now, in 2025, the Ministry has not only ignored multiple petitions submitted by Mother Nature Cambodia but has also failed to make its stance clear on the process.

We are deeply concerned about the natural resources of Koh Kong Island that remain at risk due to the silence of the authorities, while tycoon Ly Yong Phat has held development rights on the island since 2019. When citizens and natural resources are repeatedly neglected and betrayed by state authorities, that is the greatest danger of all.

In this video, we want to show how protecting this island as a marine national park can bring benefits to all Cambodian citizens, especially the local communities. We can achieve this if the Ministry manages it with the common good in mind and remains open to learning from the experiences of other countries. #SaveKohKongIsland

We present key data worth noting, including both long-term and short-term findings from 2020 to 2025. Weak law enforcement by Cambodian authorities, combined with systemic corruption, has been and continues to devastate Cambodia’s rich marine resources.

If we do not speak up and demand justice for our seas now, our marine resources, already trapped by corruption and official incompetence, will be gone, leaving nothing for future generations.

Amid unresolved land-border disputes with Thailand, Mother Nature Cambodia is drawing attention to the presence of hundreds of Thai fishing vessels operating inside Cambodian waters — with no visible response from the relevant authorities.

Our questions remain clear and urgent: Are these operations lawful? If so, under what agreements? If not, why have no firm measures been taken to defend Cambodia’s maritime resources and sovereignty?

We urge citizens to share this video and call on the government of Hun Manet to respond transparently and without delay. Every moment of silence as our marine resources are destroyed brings grave risks to the Cambodian people.

While we, the ordinary people, struggle each day just to survive, powerful private companies such as Vantage Mining (Cambodia) Co., Ltd. are actively quarrying marble inside the Prey Lang Wildlife Sanctuary, Cambodia’s last lowland forest, raking in up to hundreds of millions of US dollars every year.
Despite its status as a “protected forest,” Prey Lang has been and continues to be carved up piece by piece for powerful private companies, most of which operate with a severe lack of transparency and accountability.
✊ We call on the relevant ministries to urgently clarify and take responsibility for this case.

9 Years Since the Assassination of Dr. Kem Ley

Nine years have passed, yet the light of justice remains absent, leaving behind deep, painful memories in the hearts of the Cambodian people who lost Dr. Kem Ley, a true thinker and voice of conscience. His life was taken on July 10, 2016, at the Caltex Bokor gas station in Chamkarmon District, Phnom Penh, by a killer whose ignorance and cruelty robbed us of a national figure of reason.

Despite this, authorities have shown little effort to uncover the truth and deliver genuine justice to Dr. Kem Ley and his family. Nevertheless, as youth, activists, and citizens both inside and outside Cambodia, we continue to raise our voices in search of justice in a society that constantly boasts of peace in every direction. But what kind of peace is this, when it takes nine years just to seek justice for one humble man?

And this is only the case of Dr. Kem Ley. What about the countless other ordinary citizens who have suffered injustice for decades, across generations? How many more years must people cry out for justice in a so-called peaceful society?

Activate the Anti-Corruption Unit, which has been dormant, and compel it to fullfill its duties by investigating the case that has led to the destruction of tens of thousands of hectares of forest in Prey Lang. 3. Demonstrate an effective forest protection policy through the Ministry of Environment, one that goes beyond the current symbolic or ineffective measures and addresses deforestation with urgency.

‌If MNC is to be blamed for exposing wrongdoing, then so be it.However, the numerous mistakes committed by incompetent officials—those who repeatedly deny the truth—have caused serious harm to wildlife, biodiversity, and entire ecosystems. These actions severely affect the lives of citizens, especially children who rely on this water source for survival. Is it because the so-called “Peaceful City Government” lacks proper geographic understanding that they appear to favor only wildlife sanctuaries?  Beyond being masters at information suppression and self-praise, can we expect genuine cooperation from relevant technical officials to actually help resolve the problems faced by the people?

🌱🌱 They dreamed of protecting Cambodia’s remaining natural resources, making them safer, and preserving the beauty of this golden land for future generations. But in pursuit of that dream, they have faced repeated imprisonment and injustice. This is not the end, brothers and sisters. Their fight is not over. It is now up to us to carry it forward. #FreeOurFriends #notforgotten

This is a garbage incinerator located in Kirirom National Park. Not just one, not two, but many! Has the Ministry of Environment run out of options, resorting to using protected areas like this as garbage dumps?

What game is the Ministry of Mines and Energy playing with us? Sand is a vital resource among many natural resources that supports ecosystems, protects coastlines, and provides numerous other benefits. History has clearly shown that the government lacks the capacity to protect this resource, focusing instead on relentless extraction and exportation, which drains national wealth for the sake of money and power. We will absolutely not agree if there is another export of sand to foreign countries. #handsoffourcambodiansand

‌Democracy is a country where laws are born from the will of the people, not from the mouths of those in power.

Apart from making excuses and pretending not to know in order to avoid responsibility, what will the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Health do to address and help the people escape this toxic issue? We recently collected pictures of the smog that enveloped Phnom Penh. How can we trust the government if the relevant institutions do not seem to care about our health?

Fantastic provincial administration! Once again, they choose to turn a blind eye and remain silent, as usual. This will not resolve the issues, nor will it address their responsibility for transforming a protected area into a landfill. Meanwhile, they have been treating the wildlife corridor as a dumping ground, continuously expanding this trash site over the past three years. What an egregiously intentional act! This mismanagement of waste is bound to harm both human and animal health and further devastate our already shrinking biodiversity. Therefore, we must ask: How exactly will the Koh Kong Provincial Administration be held accountable for the consequences of their ill-conceived decision to establish this dump?
