Apart from handing out cash, we'd really like to see Try Pheap put down the chainsaw and team up with Eang Sophalleth to restore Cambodia's forests. We're honestly concerned that in another four or five years, there may be no trees left to cut down and no more money left to distribute.

Think of your future supply! 🥺😭

“Billions of Dollars in Gold Flowing Into Cambodia — Why Is No One Willing to Explain?”

Some people are deeply upset about the data we used from the Thai Customs Department regarding gold bar exports from Thailand to Cambodia. But why not ask the real questions that could lead to answers and solutions?

1. If the Thai customs data is inaccurate, why don’t Cambodian authorities release official figures to clarify the truth? Why are we so afraid of transparency?

2. Why were around US$2.25 to US$2.35 billion worth of gold imported within just 7 to 8 months in 2025, yet there has been no public verification or explanation for Cambodian citizens?

And this issue is not something raised only by Mother Nature Cambodia, nor is it something new. International media and major financial news outlets have also reported on and monitored these unusual gold flows.
Reuters reported that gold exports from Thailand to Cambodia reached around US$2.35 billion in just the first eight months of 2025, compared to US$3.04 billion during all of 2024.

Reuters also noted that the increase became so significant that the Bank of Thailand started discussing investigations and possible controls on gold trading.

Bloomberg also covered the story, reporting that gold exports from Thailand to Cambodia reached around US$2.25 billion in the first seven months of 2025, a 19% increase compared to 2024.

We are talking about billions of dollars worth of gold moving across borders in less than a year during 2025.

Some people say, “This is old data from 2025, why talk about it now?” But if billions of dollars in gold transactions appear unusual, why can’t people ask for an investigation?

Calling for transparency and investigation is not a crime. In a democratic society, it is the right of every citizen.

On the occasion of the New Year, as we move from the old year into the new, we would like to share a quote from activist Phuon Keoraksmey as a reminder to all Cambodians to continue the struggle for social justice.

Raksmey:
When I was arrested, male police officers dragged me into a vehicle. In the interrogation room filled only with men, when I was taken from the detention truck into the courtroom, and throughout the trial, I did not shed a single tear. Why should I cry? I do not believe that crying or begging for mercy, while being oppressed, having my rights violated, and being intimidated, would ever bring me freedom.
I feel deep pain when I see our people being evicted from their homes and having their land taken away. But what hurts even more is seeing them cry and beg for mercy from those who are oppressing them.

We must be brave. We must stand firm as rightful owners of our lives and land, and fight for what is ours. If they had compassion, they would not oppress us.
How long will we keep crying? It is time to stop. It is time for Cambodians to rise, to be courageous, and to continue the fight for justice and freedom.

Konthea:
Throughout history and in today’s society, no struggle has ever succeeded without the participation of women. Women are not simply standing behind the movement. They are a vital force that drives change and justice forward.
It is often said that there are two powers in this world: the sword and the pen. The sword represents force, while the pen represents knowledge and expression. But there is a third power, even stronger than both, the power of women. This power lies not only in strength, but in resilience, determination, and the courage to stand for what is right.

In this new year, let us recognize and support the role of women in the fight for social justice. When women rise and fully participate, the force for change becomes stronger and unstoppable

On the occasion of the New Year, as we move from the old year into the new, we would like to share a quote from activist Thun Ratha as a reminder to all Cambodians to continue striving for social justice.
At a time when our society is facing many challenges, every contribution, no matter how small, matters. Silence is not the solution. Participation and speaking out are the first steps toward meaningful change.

Ratha:
Continuing to take action in every possible way, within our capacity, without remaining silent or waiting for change to happen on its own, is the best path for the future of the next generation.
We cannot wait for others to act on our behalf. The future of our country depends on the actions we take and the decisions we make today. If each of us contributes, even in small ways, it can grow into a powerful force that drives real change and brings justice to our society as a whole.

On the occasion of the New Year, as we move from the old year into the new, we would like to share a quote from activist Yim Leanghy as a reminder to all Cambodians to continue the struggle for social justice.

Leanghy:
The work I do is not for personal gain, but to promote human rights, democracy, and transparency in the management and use of natural resources. A society without transparency and respect for human rights cannot achieve sustainable development. Therefore, I cannot support any actions that promote or enable corruption, as it harms both our society and our shared future.
I would like to make it clear that opposing corruption does not mean I hate or want to eliminate individuals who engage in it. Rather, it is a call for the fair and proper application of the law toward those who commit wrongdoing. The goal is not to destroy people, but to encourage change, so they can return to living with dignity and integrity.

In this new year, let us continue to stand for honesty, transparency, and justice, for a better society for ourselves and for future generations.

On the occasion of the New Year, as we move from the old year into the new, we would like to share a quote from activist Ly Chandaravuth as a reminder to all Cambodians to continue the struggle for social justice.

Dararavuth:

As tomorrow arrives, our nation continues to move forward, and our commitment to struggle continues as well. Life offers countless “first times.” For me, I have experienced many: the first time I came to know the forest, the first time I engaged in social work, the first time I took risks filming environmental issues, the first time I walked public roads to speak out, the first time I became a leader chanting for change, and even the first time I was imprisoned. There are many more first times I never imagined. I have never regretted how I chose to live my life, even though I have made many mistakes. Even if this choice I make today may still be the wrong one for myself, I believe it is meaningful because it serves my country and my people.

Recently, I have chosen a path filled with risks. It is not that I am fearless or braver than others. I simply remind myself to endure a little more and face it. Life is uncertain, and nothing is free from risk.

I am at peace with everything I have gone through, because what happened yesterday has shaped who I am today. If yesterday I had chosen to stay silent and hide at home, I would still be living in fear today.

In this New Year, may we all find the strength to keep going, to stand for what is right, and to move forward with hope. May the new year bring courage, resilience, and the change we all long for.

👉 Sand dredging for development? Yet only ghost buildings remain.

We don’t have to look far. Across Phnom Penh, unfinished and abandoned buildings stand as silent evidence, development that never reached the people.

We are not against development. But after years of sand dredging, who is really benefiting?

While natural resources are extracted at massive scale, local communities are left behind—seeing little to no real benefit, while a small group of powerful elites continue to profit.

This is not development. This is extraction without accountability.

The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982 (UNCLOS) was officially ratified by Cambodia on the morning of 16 January 2026. This decision marks an important step showing Cambodia’s participation in the international legal framework to govern, protect, and sustainably manage marine resources.

In this context, a key question many citizens are asking is: now that Cambodia has ratified UNCLOS, will illegal foreign fishing vessels entering Cambodian waters finally be effectively controlled and prevented?

Ratifying UNCLOS should not be seen merely as a symbolic display of participation in the international community. It should translate into real action to strengthen the protection of national rights and interests. This includes safeguarding the livelihoods of Cambodian fishers, protecting marine resources and biodiversity, and defending Cambodia’s maritime territory peacefully in accordance with international law.

In this regard, what citizens are now expecting is the genuine will and concrete action to enforce the law, ensuring that Cambodia’s seas and natural resources are protected and managed effectively and sustainably

$510 million for a monkey breeding farm. But should we celebrate — or be alarmed?

Both companies — the buyer (Charles River Laboratories) and the seller K-F Cambodia Ltd) — have previously been linked to illegal wild monkey trafficking networks. Monkeys were taken from forests, turned into commodities, falsely labeled as “captive-bred,” and exported abroad using data that cannot reasonably be accepted as proof of genuine captive breeding.

This American giant has a long history of using animals in laboratory testing at levels many people consider unacceptable. According to the animal rights organization PETA, authorities should not allow the company to resume importing monkeys from Cambodia. Evidence of illegality across the industry, the decline of long-tailed macaques, and public health risks should take priority over corporate profit.

In 2022, senior Cambodian officials — including a former Director-General of the Forestry Administration and officials within the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries — were charged in connection with document falsification and bribery that allowed wild monkeys to be exported under the label “captive-bred.”

In 2023, the United States suspended monkey imports from Cambodia while investigating this environmental crime. Nearly 1,300 monkeys imported by Charles River Laboratories were seized because there was insufficient evidence proving they were truly captive-bred. According to PETA, the monkeys were later returned to the company despite unresolved concerns about their origin.

Those nearly 1,300 monkeys were a warning. If we do not demand transparency about our own wildlife, how can we expect others to seek justice on our behalf?

Soon after, the company was able to persuade U.S. authorities to reopen imports during President Trump’s term. Then in January 2026, it signed a deal to purchase the K-F farm in Kampong Thom — a facility previously linked to wild monkey trafficking and falsified “captive-bred” documentation.

We should not be surprised. This follows the same pattern we have seen before:
Millions of tons of sand have been dredged from the Mekong River and exported with little transparency. Thousands of illegal Vietnamese and hundreds of illegal Thai fishing boats have been destroying Cambodia’s marine resources.

The formula is always the sam. National resources are exploited. And the people are left without clear answers — or real solutions.

We are still waiting for a professional response, and we cannot accept these immediate dismissive replies. To ensure a constructive and meaningful discussion moving forward, we call on the responsible authorities of Virachey National Park in both Stung Treng and Ratanakiri provinces to urgently arrange a proper investigation involving relevant officials and independent technical experts.

Here is a painful testimony from the community, shared through an interview with Mongabay, with the identity withheld for safety:
“If we can no longer use the water, we may have to leave to find other work, because our livelihoods depend on the O’Ta Bouk stream.”

The company Country Group is the one threatening community livelihoods, especially those of the Indigenous Brao people, by destroying their water sources. This is the company’s responsibility, not the fault of local people who are the rightful owners of their land and water. Those who must leave are the company, not the community.

Do we really need to name names when they’re already that well-known?

Anyone who dares to speak up about the destruction of natural resources is immediately labeled a “traitor.”

How long are we going to fold our arms and watch human rights violations? Or will we wait until it knocks on our own doors?

It has been 562 days since Thun Ratha and four other friends were unjustly deprived of their freedom, yet there has never been a moment when Ratha has considered abandoning his determination to protect his country’s natural resources.

Three Key Issues concerning the indigenous Bunong community of Kbal Romeas (Old Village), Kbal Romeas Commune, Sesan District, Stung Treng Province, and the Chinese company, Saiv Gek Investment Co,. Ltd, as of October 17, 2025:

1. Intentional land clearing without prior notice or consultation with the community:
The Chinese company Saiv Gek brought heavy machinery to clear forest land and boundaries between community and company areas without informing or consulting local residents. This occurred even though discussions with provincial authorities are still ongoing and no final agreement has been reached.

2. Severe impacts on the environment and indigenous culture:
The company’s land clearing and expansion have been conducted without an environmental impact assessment, posing threats to nearly 1,000 hectares of community farmland, residential lands, and spirit forests which hold deep cultural and spiritual significance. These actions also destroy habitats of rare wildlife and natural resources that the community has used and respected for generations.

3. Violation of rights and discrimination against the Bunong people:
The project violates national laws and policies protecting indigenous rights, including the 2001 Land Law and Sub-Decree No. 83, and reflects serious discrimination and violations of indigenous peoples’ rights to benefit private corporate interests.

This artwork is meant to help raise public awareness about the violations against the indigenous Bunong community of Kbal Romeas at the reported site.
It serves as a call for local authorities to urgently intervene and resolve this issue fairly, without delay, and without intimidation of citizens.

From one of Cambodia’s most famous national parks, to one of the world’s most notorious hubs for online crime!

Preah Monivong Bokor National Park, a site rich in natural beauty and history located in Kampot province, is one of Cambodia’s most well-known landmarks. What Cambodian hasn’t heard of it?

Mother Nature Cambodia had long warned about the large-scale deforestation taking place under the “Bokor City” development project, which covers a total of 27,943 hectares. Within this area, 18,987 hectares were granted as a 99-year land concession to the Sokha Company, owned by tycoon Sok Kong, a powerful businessman deeply connected to Hun Sen’s regime.

Under this project, vast stretches of Bokor’s forest have been cleared to make way for a luxury city inside a national park, complete with roads, villas, and commercial zones.

But behind the façade of the Sokha Paradise Hotel, owned by Sok Kong’s group, many buildings have reportedly been used as centers for online scam operations, where foreign workers are trafficked, detained, and forced to commit online fraud.

Reported by CamboJA News in 2023 revealed that these compounds, located on Sok Kong’s concession land, form part of a large transnational network of online fraud and human trafficking operations.

We are deeply disturbed by reports of a tragic case in which a 22-year-old South Korean student was found dead near Bokor Mountain after being brutally tortured. We can only imagine how many similar cases have gone unreported.

The death of this young Korean national has exposed the dark reality hidden behind Bokor’s “development.” A place once known as a natural paradise has turned into a mountain of fear and a stronghold of global cybercrime.

If tycoon Sok Kong has failed to turn Bokor into a world-class tourism destination in a positive way, why hasn’t the government revoked his development rights and reclaimed the land?

The spirit of protecting Cambodia’s natural resources lives on!
‌
Even though Thun Ratha and four other environmental activists are currently imprisoned, their commitment to defending nature continues to inspire. Their courage lives on to encourage every Cambodian to ask the important questions that demand transparency and accountability in the protection of our natural resources.
‌
We have three urgent questions:
1. Why are Thai fishing vessels allowed to operate inside Cambodian waters?
2. What measures has Prime Minister Hun Manet’s government taken so far to address this problem?
3. When will the government release transparent information about the movements of these Thai fishing vessels?
‌
We call on the relevant ministries to respond, including:
Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF)
Ministry of National Defense / Royal Cambodian Navy
Ministry of Environment (MoE)
Ministry of Interior
And Prime Minister Hun Manet.

In November 2012, the European Union issued Cambodia a yellow card warning for failure to cooperate in tackling Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing. One year later, in November 2013, Cambodia was escalated to a red card, the strictest sanction that banned all seafood exports to the EU.

Five years later, in 2017, Vietnam was given a “yellow card” despite its fleets being repeatedly documented for illegal fishing, even inside Cambodian waters. A yellow card is only a warning; Vietnam could still export seafood to Europe while hundreds of its fishing vessels had already been, and continue to be, active in Cambodian waters.

Vietnamese fishing vessel activities increased by more than 1,800% when comparing 2021 to 2024. From the beginning of 2021 until the end of March 2025, at least 1,066 Vietnamese fishing boats have entered Cambodian waters.

Today, we continue to bear witness, through data provided by our partner EJF (Environmental Justice Foundation), that these vessels operate freely inside Cambodia’s seas.

Mother Nature Cambodia’s question to the Cambodian government is very clear: Are these vessels fishing in Cambodian waters legally or illegally? If legally, under what agreements? If illegally, why has there been no decisive action to defend our seas and our sovereignty? These short and urgent questions require immediate answers; otherwise, our marine resources will continue to be destroyed without a doubt.

The EU gave Cambodia a red card with the intention of pushing the government to reform its fisheries management system and respect international agreements, not so that hundreds of Vietnamese fishing boats could freely enter and exploit our seas.

Join us in sharing this message and demanding urgent answers from the government.

Do not trust the sky, do not trust the stars—never trust Vietnamese fishing boats!

(Please read this article first before continuing: https://www.facebook.com/share/19fmSpD9F7/?mibextid=wwXIfr)

In 2023, Vietnam exported nearly USD 9 billion worth of seafood to the global market, with the European Union (EU) standing as one of its largest importers. By 2024, that figure had increased to USD 10 billion, signaling the steady growth of Vietnam’s seafood industry. The EU alone imported over USD 1 billion worth of Vietnamese seafood in 2024, benefiting from preferential terms under the EU–Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA).

But behind this booming trade lies a stark and troubling reality: Vietnamese fishing vessels have continued to operate illegally in Cambodian waters, extracting marine resources that do not belong to them. Meanwhile, law enforcement remains critically weak—especially on Cambodia’s side—despite our rightful ownership of these resources. These blatant acts of plunder continue unchecked. (So far, there has been no official response to this video https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1Ao1dVbBxk/?mibextid=wwXIfr )

Sustainable management of marine resources and the protection of our ocean ecosystems are vital priorities, as Prime Minister Hun Manet himself emphasized on 9 June 2025 at the opening of the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in Nice, France, under the theme: “Accelerating action and mobilizing all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean.”

While Vietnamese vessels are depleting Cambodia’s marine ecosystems, the fish they extract are transported to Vietnamese ports and then might possibly be exported to Europe for consumption!? Is this not theft of Cambodia’s natural resources? How will the European Union respond to the actions of these Vietnamese fishing vessels?

At a time when Cambodia is facing ongoing border disputes with Thailand, we call upon all compatriots to also demand justice for our maritime territories against Vietnamese fishing incursions. This crisis is not new—it is a long-standing issue that must be addressed. Mother Nature Cambodia firmly believes that when the voices of citizens unite, solutions will emerge.

Let our collective participation become a priceless expression of national unity—one that extends beyond the current border tensions with Thailand, to a louder call that defends and demands justice for Cambodia in all sectors, especially for our natural heritage that must be preserved for the next generation.

Further discussions on the EU’s “yellow card” for Vietnam and the “red card” for Cambodia are expected soon.

The Catastrophic Destruction of Cambodia’s Marine Resources Caused by the Presence of Vietnamese Trawlers.

On May 26, Mother Nature Cambodia released a video calling for transparency regarding the alarming presence of hundreds of Vietnamese fishing vessels operating within Cambodian territorial waters.

Today, we wish to highlight a dangerous and urgent issue within Cambodia’s large-scale fishing industry. This operation is rapidly leading to the catastrophic depletion of the country's marine resources within a short span of time.

The presence of hundreds of Vietnamese trawlers in Cambodian waters is an extremely serious threat that must not be overlooked. One of the most destructive practices involved is the use of trawling vessels to extract marine resources for both domestic markets and international trade. This practice, known in English as "trawling," refers to the active dragging of fishing nets (called oun in Khmer) by one or two vessels, known as trawlers. These nets may be dragged along the seabed (bottom trawling) or at various depths in the water column, depending on the target species.

According to the Dictionary of the Supreme Patriarch Chuon Nath, “oun” is a type of fishing gear shaped like a net, long in form, and equipped with floating devices, designed to be placed in deep water to trap fish.
Example: Trei oun means fish that have been caught using an oun net.

Most Vietnamese trawlers use various types of oun nets, including pair trawling nets, electric trawling nets, and others that scrape across the Cambodian seabed. These nets have the capacity to capture and kill fish of all sizes and species. They tear apart coral reefs, destroy seagrass beds, and obliterate entire marine ecosystems in a very short time. According to the Fisheries Law of Cambodia, these practices are entirely illegal and result in severe damage to the country’s marine resources.

The government must respond immediately to the ongoing presence of Vietnamese trawlers. Marine resources do not regenerate overnight. We cannot afford to wait another five or ten years, because by then, there may be nothing left.

This is Cambodia!

Cambodia, an eternal land, where by any means necessary, Hun Sen, now President of the Senate, is willing to sacrifice everything to eliminate “truth-tellers.”

Are the five youths currently in prison not Cambodian? Why is there no concern for them? Day after day, new laws are created and the Constitution, the country’s supreme law, is amended solely to serve his political clique, while failing to consider the release of innocent citizens whose rights have been violated, whose families—mothers, fathers, siblings, and children—have been torn apart and imprisoned without hesitation. Is this what leadership based on peace and moral principles looks like?

Speaking the truth to protect nature, defend human rights, and demand justice for society—has that truly become an act of treason, a “color revolution,” incitement, or an insult to the King? During the Khmer Rouge era, people were accused, arrested, tortured, and killed for such actions. And now, in this so-called “Democracy” even merely speaking out against corruption and the destruction of national resources results in a 6 to 8 year prison sentence.

Dear Khmer people, how long must our citizens continue to endure such oppression? Why is this one man and his powerful family allowed to act with such impunity?

When the law protects those who cause destruction while silencing those who defend, this reflects the state of justice in Cambodia. We cannot remain silent in the face of such reality.
As a result of the close political connections of Mr. Chay Chhing Heang, nephew of former Prime Minister Hun Sen through his aunt Hun Kimleng, and his associates including Mr. Kuong Vannak, 99 hectares of protected wildlife sanctuary land have been converted into a cement factory in a matter of moments.
It has been suggested that 99 hectares is a relatively small area and should be open to development. However, this parcel is not even counted among the vast stretches of forestland already granted to companies operating within the Prey Lang area. If forestland can be allocated at will, based solely on personal interests or subjective judgment, what will remain of our natural heritage in the years to come?
The call to protect Prey Lang does not come from a few isolated voices. It reflects the concerns of citizens across the nation. If the government continues to avoid responsibility and fails to take appropriate action, our forests, mountains, and oceans, our shared national wealth, will be irreversibly lost.
What are your thoughts on this matter?

Now seems distant from our sight, as its abundant resources

So what are we doing?
Staying silent, saying nothing, while they drain
What is rightfully ours.

As we lose our territorial power?
And what of the people’s plea?

t was not by coincidence that the government cut 99 hectares of land in the Prey Lang forest and handed it over to a private company to build a cement factory. According to data we found at the Ministry of Commerce, Mr. Chhay Ching Heang, a Khmer-Chinese businessman who currently oversees 41 companies, including KP Cement Industry, is already operating a cement factory within Prey Lang. Among them, Renaissance Minerals Cambodia is currently refining the largest amount of gold from the Okvau area, Keo Seima district, in Mondulkiri province, with a production capacity of approximately three tons per year.

We can see that gold mining activities are aggressively invading and expanding in Mondulkiri, Kratie, Kampong Thom, Preah Vihear, and Battambang provinces.

The Sixth Mandate Government projected that the gold mining business would generate an average annual income of 185 million dollars, with national budget revenue from taxes and other revenues averaging 40 million dollars per year.

Where is our money?
Was the auction process for the Okvau mining project between Cambodia and this Australian company transparent?

Will the illegal activities of sand dredging and export return, and how will we participate together to protect our maritime territory from unscrupulous groups if this indeed happens?

We, Mother Nature Cambodia cannot preserve our natural resources everywhere throughout Cambodia if the laws at the borders are like this. Urgent 🚨

Phnom Penh City!

The PM2.5 levels have reached hazardous levels on the AQI scale, posing a silent threat to the health of millions of people. However, the Cambodian government remains silent, with no action or concern, while citizens are breathing in polluted air.

We continue to hear "thank you for peace," but what is peace when there is no clean air to breathe? What is peace when people are poisoned by pollution day after day?
Where is the urgency to protect public health?

PM2.5 is not just invisible—it is life-threatening. Long-term exposure leads to respiratory diseases, heart disease, and premature death. This is not a minor issue. It is a public health crisis that is visible but largely ignored.

If the government truly values peace, urgent and transparent actions must be taken to manage polluters, reduce emissions, and protect future generations.

When we advocate for the protection of natural resources, we often face accusations of being anti-development. But should we sacrifice these vital resources in the name of progress? Is development justified if it leads to excessive depletion of our natural heritage? Our five friends have been arrested for standing up against destructive practices masquerading as development.
